While many physical education teachers have welcomed the introduction of a revised syllabus in physical education, there are others who have experienced considerable difficulty in meeting the professional challenges it presents. Principally, these teachers work in schools with poor or no physical education facilities and in some cases with students who display challenging behaviour. In response to this situation, the JCPESS has initiated a professional development programme, focusing on the establishment of a community of practice for teachers working in such circumstances in the Dublin area. This model was chosen, based on the evidence that these teachers need: time to reflect on their current practice; and an opportunity to exchange ideas within their own peer group.

The programme aims to provide these physical education teachers with professional development which will empower them to address issues posed by their challenging work situations.

The objectives of the programme are:

  • to improve the physical education experience of their students, by facilitating the development of innovative curriculum programmes based on the JCPE syllabus learning outcomes and suitable to the context of their learning environments
  • to develop a model of good practice that will be rolled out nationally, on a phased basis, to clusters of teachers in similar circumstances.

The participating teachers are committed to trialling ideas and units of work devised by the group.  There now exists a vibrant Community of Practice formed by participant teachers.  Apart from the three days of in-service provided by the JCPESS, the group has held regular workshops, hosted and delivered by its members.  This model has proved hugely successful as a way of addressing common issues and sharing good practice.  In May 2009, students from a number of these schools participated in an orienteering event held in Santry Demesne. We are particularly grateful to Mary Healy of Leinster Schools Orienteering for her tremendous organisation and to the number of volunteers from her organisation which made the event such a positive experience for students and teachers alike.

We look forward to the continued progress of the initiative.

JCPESS mailing list

icon_speechbubble The JCPESS is facilitating an electronic mailing or discussion list, to facilitate the exchange of opinions and ideas among physical education teachers. The idea is to provide a supported community where teachers learn from each other, can share resources, expertise and other benefits.
